Usually photographers do not like to use the built-in flash. Basically you can see how people use all sorts of tricks to make this camera detail useful. We also sometimes have fun with the pop-up flash and decided to shoot a video about one simple trick that will help with subject and food photography. Read More
Many novice photographers blame his technique in their failures. However, you can often get much more from your technique than it seems at first glance. For example, an 18-55 lens, which often comes with an amateur camera. He is often scolded for not being able to create a bokeh. However, knowing some tricks, you can cope with this problem. Today we will show you a few old simple creative photo techniques for beginners: Read More
We did not test security of our experiments for health and are not responsible for any possible consequences from their repetition.
1. Photographing by eyes.
Many photographers are constantly complaining that they don’t have something:
“I don’t not have a normal lens, don’t have a flash, don’t have a tripod, etc.”
We propose to look at the things positively, and use what you already have. Probably many of you have an old film compact cameras with flash.
Today, we will present a way to give second life to your old film cameras.
First of all, we need Read More
We decided to make a remake of our old post about a polarization filter taken from a mobile phone and recorded a video for the YouTube channel:
Polarizing filter – this is one of the most popular filters. It darkens the blue sky, making clouds more expressive, and also reduces the haze. Also the polarizing filter can remove light reflection from the water and leaves making the colors more saturated:
[image-comparator left=”http://koldunov.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/ploar2.png” right=”http://koldunov.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/polar1.png” method=”overlay” width=”100%” value=”50″ link_images=”false” overlayed_slider=”false” title=”” classes=”hover”][/image-comparator]
This thing is very useful, but very expensive. However, we often just throw away this filters.
The polarizing filters are used in the liquid crystal displays! We disassemble the old mobile phone and get it’s small screen. Polarizing filter looks like a film but we did not unstick it, to keep it from curling (and we also wanted to avoid appearance of glue-traces) Read More
When MIFIK was planing a new photo-studio we were asked to invent a way, to control the daylight. In this video we talk about how we made a such a system.
From time to time we go hiking for a few days or weeks and often face a problem of lack of electricity. This year we decided to try to charge the camera from the solar panels. And now we are going to explain why we chose them and describe our impressions.
When you are going to hike for a long time far away from electricity, you can solve the problem with the photo camera’s power supply in different ways:
V-Flat – this is a very simple but functional construction, consisting of two sheets fastened together in the form of “V” letter.
This accessory is widely used because of its simplicity. And surprisingly, it is rarely seen in Russian photostudios.
One of the most important concepts in landscape photography is the hyperfocal distance. Sometimes photographer hasn’t neither calculator depth of field nor table of hyperfocal distances. It is a typical situation for beginners, and our students often asked us how to deal with it.
Heretofore we advised the classic way “to divide the space in the frame into three parts, and focus on the first third,” but this method is very rough and we do not like it at all. This forced us to invent new method of finding hyperfocal distance. We haven’t met this method in books or Internet yet, that is why we decide to describe it for you now.
Today we will focus on how to taking pictures without tripod at home in difficult light conditions.
The absence of a tripod usually means that photographer is a beginner and perhaps has not enough experience. Of course, this article is first of all for such newcomers. Let’s find out why tripod is necessary: take a typical situation, particularly usual for autumn and winter:
People are fond of photographing themselves on the background of beautiful places, but this is not always easy to do. One of such difficult subjects for the implementation is photo on the background of starry night sky. And today we want to tell you, how we usually do it.
Canon EOS 5d mark II | Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM
ISO 1600 | f/1.4 | 15 s
– camera with manual settings
– tripod or any stable surface
– flash or any camera with a built-in flash
– night, stars and people
First of all you have to learn how to take pictures of the starry sky itself.
A huge part of modern citizens have never seen the Milky Way. Someone does not even know of its existence. Usually powerful artificial lighting and partly polluted atmosphere interfere to see the Milky Way.
iso 800 | f/1.4 | 20s
In order to see the bright stars and the Milky Way in your pictures, you should climb higher (atmosphere is thinner in the mountains), wait for the most transparent atmosphere (after the rain for example, and of course the absence of fog, haze and other troubles will increase transparency), get rid of light sources. If you are away from the city, interfering light source for you is the moon. So the stars are best seen on a moonless night (for example, the new moon).
Of course, when planning a night shoot, you need to select a place in the daytime. This picture was an exception. Due to the large amount of work we did not have time during the day to walk around the surroundings of our base.
ISO 800 | f/1.4 | 20 s
The only suitable landscape for photography that we had noticed was not impressive. However with nightfall after all it was decided to go and take a picture
It is believed that the object at the picture should look like ordinary people see it. But if people can not see what the camera can see? If camera makes photos in the infrared or ultraviolet range, or at night when human eye is almost blind? Then we get a bad picture? Dishonest photo? Inadequate?
Canon EOS 550D | Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
17 mm | ISO 800 | f/11 | 30 s
The question is very controversial, so we will only mention one more ordinary phrase – “the human eye is more perfect than the camera.” However, color of the night human eye can not see, and the camera – easily.
This photo was taken for our project “Screenography”. Details of the technology we have already described here (sorry, but for today that text is only in Russian) however, in a few words it looks like this: photos were made by small format (35mm format) camera were, but the original picture is a projection of the image on the focusing screen 18 × 24 cm by means of a lens or even a simple magnifying glass
Canon EOS 5d mark 2 | Canon TS-E 45 mm f/2.8
ISO 100 | f/4 | 1/160 s
After serious portraits we started fooling around and we used everything that fall in our hands. Liliya (name of our beautiful model) chose two different sized magnifying glass, and we easily achieved cheerful emotions on photo due to her sunny disposition.
Here is the church of Alexander Nevsky in Ust-Izhora. At this place in 1240 there was a battle that is now known as the “Battle of the Neva.”
On the day when this image was taken, we without any reason at all decided to test Mamiya 645 with a wide-angle lens (45 mm) in photographing of landscapes.
Here is the result of the first complete photo shoot experiment for … It is difficult to describe: we used camera Canon EOS 5D mark II as a digital camera back for Sinar F1 or Sinar F1 as a lens adapter for Sinaron 210mm f/5.6 for Canon EOS 5D mark II.
Such “Photo-Frankenstein” allows you to use many features of large-format cameras, including full tilt, used in this image.
At first we asked our model to close her eyes completely by shadow of hands. But then the idea to highlight only one eye suddenly appeared. Further correction of posture led to this picture, and at the same time determined the name of the picture.
The idea was born of photography, you know, by chance. Although how many ideas are not born by chance?… It was late night, passing into dawn. We were doing a shoot of rather turbulent river on a fairly wide-angle lens (17 mm at frame size near APS).
Usually when you are making photos at night, you discern very little in the viewfinder, that is why we were forced to navigate on the LCD screen.
Going to shoot a nude pregnant woman, we decided to move away from the standard poses. Nowadays one of most standard positions for pregnant is the notorious “one hand under the belly, the second hand covers the chest.”
In order to “fix” this position and adapt it to our photographic style, we asked Sasha to wrap her right arm around the back.
The photo was taken in a small photostudio with white walls and in order to achieve a soft, diffused light, we decided to direct a flash head on the wall behind the camera.
Some viewers are wondering whether this is a random position or we tried to catch that moment? The answer is — no, not a random one.
The photo was taken near Sablinskiy waterfall. We wanted to make a sunset-shooting, but instead of a beautiful sunset sky we got overcast, rain and darkness, that tred on our heels. As a result, we had about an hour to invent something before the darkness.
This photo was taken at the same photo-event as the previous one. We are always blamed for the fact that we fling our models on trees, ask them to stay for some minutes in uncomfortable positions – torment them :). As a previous picture, this one illustrates that Koldunovs do not mind to climb a tree and hang in an uncomfortable position too.
Once we participated in photo-meeting, which was dedicated to hippies. For the venue was chosen lovely park “Alexandria” (it’s in Peterhof). We decided to take Mamiya 645 Super and Ektar 100 film with us, hoping that this will be enough (although in truth, neither the camera nor the film does not belong to the heyday of the hippie movement).
As you know, we’re not big fans of the studio shooting, at least – for now. Probably because this style of shooting, when you need to create suitable conditions yourself, is not very suitable for us: we do like to use, what we have. Sometimes, in order to fundamentally change the process of work in the photostudio it is enough to open the window and it is excellent when photostudio has one (and preferably several). Recently, by the way, photostudios with an opportunity to use daylight revived (reason for joy!).
